10 LOCAL JROTC STUDENTS TO BE AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS McCORMICK TRIBUNE CITIZENSHIP MEDAL AND SCHOLARSHIP
Awards ceremony to be held honoring commitment to strong citizenry
CHICAGO, June 3, 2007
The McCormick Tribune Foundation citizenship program awards 10 Chicago area JROTC students the Citizenship medal. This award, which honors graduating JROTC cadets for their demonstrated commitment to good citizenship, reflects the Foundation’s mission to advancing advance the ideals of a free democratic society by investing in our children, communities and country.
“We are honored to invest in promising young individuals that are committed to service,” said John Sirek, director of the McCormick Tribune Foundation’s citizenship program. “Engaged young citizens, who care about their communities and country, are the first step to creating a better tomorrow."
The top 10 JRTOC finalists include:
- Volodymyr Hirnyj, Taft High School, Chicago, Ill.
- Eric Gonzalez, Lincoln Park High School, Chicago, Ill.
- Sergey Koretskov, Buffalo Grove High School, Buffalo Grove, Ill.
- Patricia Cortes, Curie High School, Chicago, Ill.
- Brett Rich, Wheeling High school, Wheeling, Ill.
- James Taylor, Prospect High School, Chicago, Ill.
- Cory Pansing, Marmion Academy, Aurora, Ill.
- Brian Zimmerman, Marmion Academy, Aurora, Ill.
- Evan Williams, Marmion Academy, Aurora, Ill.
- Jaclyn Salvatini, Rolling Meadows High School, Rolling Meadows, Ill.
In addition to the citizenship medal, recipients will also receive a $5,000 scholarship towards their college or university expenses or $1,000 contribution in their name to a charity of their choice. The selection of the finalists was determined by each student’s commitment to becoming a better citizens by volunteering in their communities, maintaining strong academic standing and demonstrating a long commitment to the JROTC program.
There were also five local ROTC candidates selected to receive this honorary medal. The selection of the ROTC finalist was based on academic standings, the demonstration of strong patriotism, selfless service and being a civic leader in their communities. The finalist will receive the citizenship medal and a $1,000 donation in their name to a charitable organization of their choice.
An award ceremony will be held for the 10 JROTC finalists on Tues., June 5, 2007 at the McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum, 445 N. Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Ill. The awards ceremony begins at 5:30 pm.
